Fiberglass Pool vs. Gunite: Which Needs a Crane?

Pool installation methods change the crane requirement completely. If the shell arrives as a single large piece, precision lifting is not optional.

Fiberglass pools nearly always need a crane

A fiberglass pool shell is delivered as one finished unit. It has to be lifted off the trailer, carried over obstacles, and lowered into excavation with very tight tolerances.

That is exactly where a boom truck shines. We can place the shell cleanly over fences, landscaping, and tight side-yard access without damaging the pool or the property.

Gunite is different

Gunite pools are typically built in place, so the shell itself is not craned into the yard. A crane may still be used for equipment, materials, or special site constraints, but not for a single drop-in shell.

That means homeowners comparing the two systems should factor crane logistics into a fiberglass installation from the beginning.

Backyard access matters more than most people expect

The biggest challenge is often not the pool weight. It is the approach path, fence height, tree canopy, neighboring structures, and whether the street setup gives us a safe lift angle.

When we review the site ahead of time, we can usually map out the exact placement path and avoid surprises on install day.
